DEC 24 – NATIONAL CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY
December 24 is observed as “
NATIONAL CONSUMER RIGHTS DAY” every year in India. On the same day Consumer
protection act 1986 was enacted that is why it is celebrated as national
consumer rights day.
Consumer protection act 1986
provide comprehensive legislation for protection of consumer rights. The rights
under consumer protection act 1986 flow from the rights enshrined in articles
14 to 19 of constitution of India. Under this act the rights of the consumers
are as follows.

to information

Right
to choose
4)
Right
to be heard
5)
Right
to seek redressal
6)
Right
to consumer education
Right to safety protects
consumers against the sale of goods and services which are hazardous to life
and property , right to information informs consumer quality, quantity, weight
and price of goods and services. Right to choose enables consumers to access
variety of goods and services at competitive prices.
Right to be heard makes
consumers to approach semi-judicial and judicial bodies in case of violation of
the above laws. Consumers problems are heard at appropriate forums. In the same
way right to seek redressal seeks legal redressal against consumer exploitation
. lastly, right to consumer education stresses consumer education.
COMPLAINT AGAINST TRADERS :
Where to lodge complaint
depends on the cost of goods and services and compensation asked for damages
1)
if
it is less than 20 lakhs, - District Forum
2)
if
it is more than 20 lakhs and less than
1 crore – State Commission
3)
If
it is more than 1 crore – National Commission
For all complaints
documentary evidence is essential. Hence consumers are advised to take bill
receipts, guarantee cards etc.
